Treating Tactile Defensiveness

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wake up your soul! Wake up your spirit! Life is a journey. I have 8 students who are ready to get their hands sticky and messy and have fun doing it!

I have 8 high school aged students who have incredible personalities and are full of love.

We are in a public school in Texas and have great support within our school. My students enjoy day to day interaction with their peers amongst the special and general education population. Just like any other teenager they can express their emotions even though they are at an infant to toddler cognitive level. My students are severely and profoundly disabled. They have multiple disabilities. Seven of them are in wheel chairs and some can walk with assistance. They receive a variety of services on a weekly basis that consist of speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, vision, and even music therapy.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of hands on fun stuff such as play-doh, clay, sand, and tool sets that will aid my students in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and strengthening hand grasps. This type of hands on therapy will provide for a tactile, olfactory , and visual pleasurable experience for my students. Through these hands on opportunities my students are engaged while expressing themselves in their own creative way. This fun simple tactile play of sand and play-doh in squashing, squeezing, rolling, flattening , puncturing, and poking will aid in their fine motor development. By providing objects from each themed unit varying from a wide range of textures, colors and shapes to add to Play-doh my students will have a multi-sensory experience and will engage them with the world around them in a whole new way.

Some of my students have tactile defensiveness meaning they are sensitive to touch.

This sensory processing disorders prevents them from actively participating in classroom activities, play, and other learning and social interactions. Your donations to our classroom project will decrease the defensive/aversive reaction my students have to a variety of sensory objects.
