"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island." -Walt Disney
My students love participating in literature groups and discovering the treasure that great books have to offer. The biggest challenge is finding sets of books for them to read together.
I am privileged to teach at a school that values student choice, discovery, rigor and FUN!
My third grade students are very curious and love learning new things. They especially enjoy all things related to science and history. My students set goals and work hard to achieve them. Each of my third graders work to read for at least 100 hours during the year.
My Project
My students really enjoy getting the opportunity to read chapter books in their guided reading groups. A group reads the book together. After reading a chapter, they have a discussion about the material and respond to it in there reading notebooks. Through this process, they are working on reading, speaking, listening, writing and critical thinking skills. Chapter books allow me to choose literature that is more engaging and interesting than stories that are contained in a reading text book. I am able to differentiate by choosing books that are the perfect Lexie level for each reading group. I also choose books that are a part of a series to help encourage additional reading when the first book is complete. My students are always excited when they find the next book in the series!
These literature circles help to foster a true love for reading.
Third graders who love to read are on the road to becoming life-long readers and learners. I feel that this is the greatest treasure that I can give to my students! Thank you for your help and generosity.
