Wow-are we ever busy! Morning, break, between classes, lunch time, etc. -no matter the time we are a happening place. 21,000 visits first quarter. Students come not only to check out books, but to hang out, play games, socialize with their neighbors, and for some it is just a safe place to be.
Our students are the best!
They are full of energy and fun to be around. Our school has a rich tradition and being almost 80 years old affords it a unique distinction from other schools. Students here feel that pride and reflect that in their demeanor and attitudes. Ours and our feeder high school have a long tradition of academic excellence and expectations are high. Lets give them a modern, updated work space that invites them in, not chases them out!
My Project
The vision I have for our library is one of tradition and distinction-not antiquated and out of touch with current trends. Old metal bookshelves do not add to the ambiance of an academic institution where not only can learning take place but that reflects the pride we have in our school. Students will be more willing to browse shelves if the presentation is appealing to them and replacing shelving that has been around for decades really shows them we care enough to try and give them the best. Eight new bookshelves that are centered directly in the middle of the room, a focal point you could say, will really set the tone of the library. These will be prominent display areas for high interest reading material.
Showing students that we care enough to improve and update their surroundings instills a lot of pride in everyone.
Inviting social and learning areas encourage a higher number of visitations and adds a more academic quality. If the presentation is appealing, they will be more likely to spend time browsing and in turn more likely to actually pick up a book. This will set the stage as we work towards a total makeover for our library and encouraging lifelong reading habits.
