Do you remember when you opened a chapter book the first time and thought WHERE ARE THE PICTURES? Comic books tie the visual of the illustrations in with the text. It creates a fun reading opportunity that motivates and creates a bridge for students to move from picture books to chapter books.
My students are located in a rural, farm town.
Yet, the town is split between many farm students, residential, and apartment living students. They all have something in common though, they are all super-duper creative! My bunch of students this year love to read and write. They are always asking me for writing time AND to take my books home. Thirty percent or more of our students receive free or reduced price lunch so taking my classroom books home is a huge deal for them because many don't have a large collection of books. They range between 7 and 9 years old so are captivated by the world of color and visuals aka comics.
My Project
What will my students learn? My students would learn so much from this collection of comic books. They would be motivated to read, learn new vocabulary, have extensive opportunities to discuss character development because comics have great character development. They would learn author's purpose and be able to tie their reading skills they are mastering into their writing. They would learn author's and illustrator's craft and apply it to their own comic books that they would create.
We need the Toon Collection, which will help my students learn basic reading and writing skills. When they begin to have a mastery level grasp, they will create their own comics. They will develop new characters and plots and introduce the author's craft that they learned throughout our comic study. At the end of the writing process, students would enjoy a "publishing party" just like the collection of books discusses in the teacher's guide. This would give students a purpose. With a purpose in education, anything is possible.
Please help make a difference in my students' lives.
They are deserving. They come to school with a fantastic learning attitude and a willingness to read and write. I want to show them that learning is a lifelong process and that they can develop a love for reading and writing that will span their lifetime. Please help my students "TOON into Comics Genre Study for Reading and Writing".
