My Students

Transport my students to ancient Mexico? One way would be to introduce a lesson on creating a Repajado, an ancient process of pressing a design into soft metal creating a 3-D effect. What a great way to connect to VAPA Standard 3.0: Historical and Cultural Connection to my 3-D Design students!

My students are energetic, creative and imaginative young people with a quest to make art any way they can.

Our high school is located in an urban neighborhood in California. Our students mostly come from hard working, low sociol-economic families without the many opportunities offered to communities surrounding ours.

My Project

Exploring history and different cultures is an exciting way to introduce new art skills, techniques and mediums to my 3-D Design students. Repajado, a process of pressing a design into soft metal, introduces my students to an ancient art that dates clear back to the Mayan and Aztec cultures. Students will draw a contemporary design showing a positive side of their own community where they live and go to school and compare that to the historical communities of an ancient world. History will come alive as we explore this new 3-D dimensional technique and medium.

Connecting with our diverse cultures in our urban neighborhood will only enhance my students appreciation for their community.
