This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading about how scientists take ecological measurements is pretty boring. They want to get out there and actually collect data with real equipment.

My marine biology students come from all parts of an urban melting pot.

They travel to our school to be a part of a special marine science program. Our school is less than two miles from the ocean. Our goal is to give them as many hands-on experiences as possible. They have learned so much about our ocean so far, I hope they envision a future working in and around the marine environment.

My Project

The quadrat materials I am requesting will replace the 20 year old cracked and duct-taped PVC pipes that have been used for the last 20 years. We take an annual trip to the rocky shore to survey marine life using real ecological protocols. I want the kids to feel like we care enough about them to replace dilapidated equipment.

They identify the species, calculate percent-coverage, and realize they have the potential to be a real scientist.
