Third Graders Need Books for Listening Center

My students need 3 complete sets of Read-Alongs to listen to during our literacy block.

My Students

Frustrated! This is how my students feel when they try to read third grade level books. The words that they sound out just don't make sense. They need books for our listening center to hear how the words are supposed to sound to develop the fluency needed to become good readers.

Our school is a public charter school with a very diverse population of students.

We are a moderate poverty school. Students and parents make many sacrifices to provide transportation and support for our school. Many of my students come from low income homes with few reading resources. They are wonderful, bright eight and nine-year-old boys and girls who are thirsty for knowledge. Their curiosity about everything is amazing, but they often become frustrated because reading seems so hard for them. If there was a way for them to listen to fluent reading each day, it would make a huge difference in our classroom. Books on tape and CD would open new worlds to my students.

My Project

The resources that we need are books on tape and CD to use in our listening center. These books would allow 4 students at one time to listen to the same chapter book. Students would be able to listen to books that they would never be able to read on their own, exposing them to new genres of literature. Most of all, listening to good books will increase their love of reading. I want my students to love to read and think of books as good friends.

Books for our listening center will make a broad impact on my students.

It will result in better grades, but more importantly, it will give students confidence to continue reading. The only way to improve in reading is for students to practice, practice, practice. As their fluency increases, so will their comprehension. This will enable them to meet third grade standards as well as prepare them for fourth grade and the future. Any support will be much appreciated and gratefully acknowledged.
