Opening a book and diving into a story is one of the greatest joys a teacher can teach a child. Losing yourself in a good story is a way for children to become anything they want, go to anywhere they want, and learn anything they want.
The students in my classroom are facing so many challenges: learning English, dealing with working parents that they never see, and some are even helping to get up siblings and getting them ready for school.
They experience more, and live through more than any young child should. When they come into my classroom I want them to be able to be a child, love school, and be able to find a book and lose themselves in it. But in kindergarten they have to have a starting place.
My Project
I am requesting several different types of hands-on materials that will aid students in working with beginning sight words: a flip chart with sight word poems, a bingo game, a string up kit for sight words, and sight word flash cards. All of these materials will aid students in learning sight words which sets the foundation for learning to read basic books.
Learning to read is so very important for all children.
The students in my classroom, with your help, will have a chance to find their voice through sight words and later through books.
