About My Students

Of all the projects our class has used our DonorsChoose.org community for, this project is the most exciting to me as a teacher--it is actually my students in charge this time! Fifteen of our high school band students are creating this project to fund their honor band's trip to Washington D.C.

Raising money is often a challenge, especially when the goal amount is so large that it seems nearly unattainable. But my students have great creativity and will, and during our brainstorming sessions regarding fundraising, we began to discuss the possibility of using DonorsChoose.org to make it easier to reach our friends and family who live all over the country. The students know that they have great support from their families and our community, and going to play music in Washington D.C. for the National Independence Day Parade creates a great deal of excitement. They are ready to work those social skills, share the news about their project, and get the financial support that will allow them to represent their school, their community, and the state of Kansas in this prestigious event.

The benefits our students will take away from this experience are nearly as endless and meaningful as the memories they will share along the way. Rehearsals for this honor band take place throughout the upcoming spring semester, and during this time they will meet and form lasting relationships with student musicians from all over the area. Many will even move forward in music and join the same college band! The extra time they spend playing their instruments will positively impact their abilities as musicians, and mobilizing their community to support them on their journey will help them feel more comfortable, capable, and equipped to use positive leadership to make their dreams possible.

In Their Own Words

We are a group of students, nominated by our band director, to participate in the Mid America All-Star Marching Band and will have the opportunity to play in the National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C. In order to participate, we need to raise money for 15 trip fees. Through the support from our school and community, we believe we will be able to accomplish this goal.

This trip will not be possible without the help of others, and creating excitement and support for a cause such as this is an important aspect of learning to be a leader. We will personally talk to our community members and ask for their support through donations toward our trip fees.

Playing in the Mid America All-Star Marching band will bring pride to our small town. This opportunity will develop our musical skills along with our leadership skills, and we will be able to take what we learn from the experience and share it with the other students in our band. Our band has grown so much in the last few years, and this is our chance to show our fellow students and community how far we have come.
