My class is an adventure in learning everyday. Whether it be an academic skill or a life lesson, my students are on an expedition of discovery. My class consists of independent thinkers and inquisitive learners who love science.
I am a special education teacher.
In other words, I spend my days investigating how each of my students learn and most of my nights planning to accommodate those learning styles for each student. I get the privilege of reaching the learning core of each of my students and watching them get excited about learning. I teach in a special day school for students who are having difficulty maintaining in a regular school environment. Unfortunately, that often means that my students do not get the opportunity to experience science like their non-disabled peers at other schools. My students are hands-on learners and receive the biggest benefit from lessons that involve an interactive element. When my students can touch, smell and see science, they learn science.
My Project
"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure science"-Edwin Powell Hubble. This quote clearly defines my students. They are hands-on learners with a thirst to see and experience the side of science they can not experience in the textbook. On a daily basis I am asked if we can do an experiment or create something from our science text-sometimes easier said, than done. We will borrow some equipment from others but it becomes difficult due to scheduling to get things when we need them. I have requested a microscope of our own and a biology learning kit. My class can use the microscope to examine the world their eyes cannot see and the biology learning kit has hands-on materials that cover several of the state performance indicators included in middle school science learning objectives.
These items will help my students connect to the world of science and let them understand the world has dimensions beyond what they see everyday.
Science is the core of the universe. When a student connects to science they connect to the world. This donation will open the door for my students and help them connect to their environment on an entirely new level.
