The Things They Donated: A Humble Request for Books
My students need 50 copies of The Things They Carried to assist with improving literacy skills and to enrich our study of American Literature for 11th graders.
The goal of my class is to put students in the best position for them to succeed, the fun part is allowing them to define what that success means to them. With an emphasis on critical thinking and higher level questioning, students aren't just learning about literature, they're preparing for life.
My students are representative of the very diverse (ethnically and socio-economically) high school population.
Beyond those designations, they are a group of determined and enthusiastic 11th graders that help make up a population of some of the most spirited teenagers I have ever seen. Their passion for their school and community is truly inspiring.
My Project
These books will aid students in their study of American Literature, as is required in 11th grade. Beyond that, we will be studying the text alongside the theme of "fear," a topic that 11th graders applying to college and trying to meet graduation requirements know all to well.
The incredible thing about obtaining new books is that its impact will be felt long after this group of kids is gone.
While students in the current class will certainly appreciate studying this collection of short stories (many of last years students told me it was their favorite book), bolstering our collection now will ensure years of future use from a student body that is always eager to learn.
