Ms. Deshotels from Lafayette LA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need plants, grow kits, and composting materials to learn about their environment and how to take care of it. We would mostly like to grow and maintain our outdoor garden.

"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our children." -Ancient Indian proverb
Our students come from low-income families and most cannot afford their science fees.
They are in search of their niche and over the course of this year, have shown a genuine interest in science and the improvement and knowledge of our environment and community through outdoor/hands-on experiences. We have recently taken on a landscaping project, creating a Learning Garden with materials donated from local home improvement stores. My students have taken such a great interest and educational investment in this project, I wish to establish an outdoor classroom, continue growing the garden, and incorporating similar hands on activities and projects lead by students, involving the improvement and advancement of the community and our school by helping kids explore the natural world and their impact on the environment. The seeds have been planted in these students; all we need is to nurture and support their growth.
We were loaned some gardening tools from a neighboring school, but they need their tools back, and we want our project to not only continue, but grow. We hope that with the basic tools and supplies, such as shovels, rakes, hoses, etc. we are able to tend to our gardens and enrich the environmental education of our students and the community. With these materials, we will be able to learn first hand how to take care of our environment and the resources given to us by our earth. My Environmental Science students will be the ones planting and maintaining the plants around campus. By doing this they are able to learn plant adaptations, environmental stimuli, biotic and abiotic factors of an environment, food chains, nutrient cycles, plant parts/reproduction, among many other valuable environmental topics studied over the course of the semester. My students can literally see the fruits of their labor and their role in the environment around them.
It is important that we educate our youth about taking care of our earth, their home.
Nowadays, young people get so wrapped up in technology, they forget about the essentials. I want to bring them back to Earth, teach them to be more grounded, and have them establish an appreciation for outdoor life and learning as well.
