Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have gotten excited over reading in our Steampunk Reading Club! Each Wednesday, we meet during our lunch period to talk about books we have read and books we want to read. We share our love of the high adventures and creative worlds of Steampunk.
The club members come from a 90%+ Free/Reduced Lunch student population.
Since we started the club at the beginning of school, we have averaged 25-30 members each week. The biggest problem I have is keeping them in books! They devour them so fast, we soon run out of books for the whole group. I am wanting to get a couple of books ahead of them with this project.
My Project
My students have been greatly affected by the club. I have had parents marvel at their "non-reading" son and daughter who is spending time evenings with a book rather than a video game or television show. My students have participated in programs to get other students in the school turned on to reading by dressing up as their favorite book character. We plan to have some authors visit the school and talk about their writings.
We need 20 copies of the graphic novel "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O'Neill and 20 copies of "Darker Still: A Novel of Magic Most Foul," a Gothic romance by Leanna Renee Hieber. I am trying to appeal to those club members who like action adventure and those who like romantic adventures. Some, no doubt, will want to read both books, so the books will be available for check out for these and future Steampunk readers.
We need to keep the momentum going for club members.
Your donation will insure that there is no let up in the progress we have made to create a true reading culture in our school. Thanks in advance for your help.
