Do you remember what its like, sitting in that seat in high school, and not getting a lot out of your day?
We are a small rural community based at in the GA mountains.
Our school is not large enough to offer a huge variety of science courses and electives. Often students are not engaged in STEM or other Science Fair related activities. Our students a positive, energetic, and full of inquiry. This year, in order to do an astronomy event, we had to do a Saturday field trip far from home. It was exciting, but only a few students could attend our Astronomy day.
Next year, I intend to have astronomy week and complete the lesson for every 11th and 12th grader at our High School.
My Project
In the resource list we have asked for a telescope. After all, that's how you see the stars. I will incorporate primary lessons during the school day. I have already won an starry sky nebula in a grant this current school year. It was this grant that peeked the high interest in Astronomy. In the resource list is a star finder, to locate the planets on an overnight investigation. Also a constellation demo for the classroom experience. And finally, a capstone project.
What if we ever needed to live in outer space. How would we eat? live? So, we also included a space farm, to learn about the growing conditions in space.
The impact on my class project will be huge.
Over 200 11th and 12th grade students will be effected by this donation. It will increase the love of science just as the students are quite curious about this topic. I plant to integrate the classroom project into a year long commitment and investigation. This will be the only way our small rural community can experience science to this magnitude.
