"Every child is an artist." - Pablo Picasso. In our Art room, students explore their identity, express emotions and ideas, solve problems, and develop their craftsmanship skills to build confidence so that they will continue to use their imagination and creativity through a lifetime of learning.
My students are a diverse, energetic, and a wildly creative bunch!
I have a total of 395 students, grades 2-5, in one of the lowest income areas of our city, with 70% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch. In spite of the economic obstacles so many of my students face, they bring a wealth of creativity, diverse histories, and languages to each project. In our Art program, we focus on projects that help students see themselves not only as valuable and unique individuals but also essential parts of a positive community. This type of learning engages students in the larger school community and promotes a positive learning environment.
My Project
We will begin our project with a study of graffiti as an art form from ancient Rome to its present day forms, connection to hip hop culture, and modern environmentally friendly manifestations. We will discuss the problems/consequences of illegal graffiti as well as opportunities for legal forms of graffiti as exemplified by many businesses in our area. We will focus our graffiti work on the power of positivity by designing graffiti stencils of positive words and symbols. My students will work with a professional graffiti/airbrush artist to learn proper techniques and skills to produce their own graffiti. Each student will design their own stencil and use the airbrush tools to create their own graffiti sign. Students will also contribute a design to a collaborative graffiti mural that will be installed in our school.
This project will help students think deeply about graffiti as an art form, social ramifications of both illegal and legal graffiti, as well as how they can make a difference through the power of positive messages.
Students will also learn about how to use the airbrush tool to create their graffiti designs. Finally, students will have a piece of art that they can proudly display, give as a gift, or contribute their piece to our collaborative graffiti mural.
