This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine a colorful art gallery filled with beautiful masterpieces, painted by young students with special needs. My peanut-sized artists could very well be the next budding Picassos or Monets as they wield their brushes towards the canvas. I would love to hang their work around our building.
My early childhood special education students have been identified as having developmental delays, autism, Down syndrome, and other special needs.
They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old (preschool & kindergarten-aged.) My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning!
Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood, and more than 75% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. For some of our students, our school building is a safe haven. Many of their families struggle to make ends meet.
My Project
As students apply paint to canvas, they will learn about color, gain fine motor control, and gain confidence in their ability to create and make their world beautiful. Using paint also provides a new sensory experience for my preschool students with special needs. They will learn through the process of creating with their own hands. They will learn that their ideas have value. Simply providing the experience also stimulates language development, giving them new things they are proud of and want to talk about.
For children with a language delays, art can be a new means of self-expression and communication about the world around them.
My students have typically had very limited or no opportunities to paint before coming to school. Your gift will enrich their school experiences in immeasurable ways.
