Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The top ten ways to becoming a better reader: Read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read! Putting a book in the hands of a child will open the possibilities for his/her future. You can help insure a giant smile on the faces of my 23 second graders by supporting our project.

I teach twenty-three enthusiastic second graders in a low-income school where the majority of students qualify for free lunches.

Due to recent budget cuts, our school is unable to purchase many new materials for our classrooms. Most of the students in my class are ready to read chapter books. Making the jump from eye-catching picture books to chapter books is a daunting task for some second graders. These chapter books will motivate my students because in second grade reading a chapter book is about as cool as it gets! The books I selected are appropriate for different reading levels. In order for my students to grow as readers they need to read "good fit" books, not too easy and not too hard.

My Project

This project is very important to my students because it takes them to that next step of reading. They are no longer just reading pictures books. They are reading chapter books, something they have been working very hard for. It is my goal to instill in their hearts a love of reading and to create life-long readers. My students look forward to working on reading every day! Unfortunately, my stash of chapter books leaves much to be desired. My students read at different levels and these books will help meet the needs of all of my students! I selected five copies of each book so that we can grow as readers together. These sets of books will transform our literacy block. I will be able to motivate my students in guided reading groups while together we practice reading strategies and improve English vocabulary and fluency. Some of the books are part of series and will motivate my students to seek out other books in the series and keep reading!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know.

The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss. Your generous donation will send 23 children chasing through the pages of mountains of chapter books! This funded project will help perpetuate a cycle of a love of reading and learning.
