Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have yet to discover the wonder and allure of great books. Some struggle with basic literacy skills, while others simply have never been introduced to subjects and themes that capture their hearts and minds.
Many of my students come from impoverished, disadvantaged households where reading materials of any kind are scarce.
Some of my students have even confided to me that my English class is the first one in which they've ever read a book in its entirety. I've learned, however, that when kids are introduced to compelling reading materials, their interest levels soar.
My Project
As an English and Humanities teacher, compelling stories serve as both the foundation and catalyst for almost all classroom instruction. Because my school is continually in the crosshairs of budget cuts, our most essential resources have been dwindling at an alarming pace - resources that include a cache of old, decrepit, and damaged books. By having their own copy of The Kite Runner, students will be able to engage in actively reading their books. They will annotate them, earmark them, and highlight main ideas or startling events. In other words, they will be able to improve their literacy by reading a compelling, memorable story that can also be related to their lives.
Because the economic circumstances of my students has already placed them at an academic disadvantage, providing them with compelling, challenging books that they can call their own will help to improve their literacy while also strengthening their bond with the written word.
