My students need engaging early readers, including The Brand New Readers Classroom Box, Brand New Readers Purple Set, and Brand New Readers Red Set to help them get a strong start to becoming lifetime readers.
This could be the year that magic happens and my students fall in love with reading! However, some of my students have not yet discovered the exciting worlds that books offer. Unfortunately, as a young teacher, I only have access to a limited number of books, some of which are rather outdated.
I have sixteen spectacular students in my first-grade classroom.
Our school has 42% English-language learners and 57% of students from low-income families. Our school has over 500 students, and only has kindergarten through second-grade. This allows for a variety of opportunities for collaboration among teachers and grouping students for guided reading groups. The majority of my class came in below grade-level for reading, and needs intensive reading intervention in order to get them up to speed.
My Project
A teammate of mine uses the Brand New Readers series and her students are in love with every book they read! Their eyes light up with joy every time they open one of her engaging books and I have noticed how much her books have increased her students love for reading. I cannot wait for my students to fall in love with our classroom library, as well. I want my students to be able to experience that joy, excitement, and that same deep love for reading as their fellow peers. These books will be used on a daily basis. Students will have the opportunity to read them during reading group, have them in their book boxes for independent reading, or even for their take-home reading bags.
Understanding what we read involves a set of skills and strategies that begin early in life and that continue to become refined and deepen as the years go by.
Meaningful and engaging books make this possible, and the earlier we can support children on the road to understanding, the better.
