I believe in practical application of Biology and I try very hard to relate every day needs as to why the students need Biology. I always hear, "I am going to be this....I don't need Biology". I want to bring it front and center in their lives.
My students and school are diverse from all backgrounds.
We have a very strong science program here and we are doing everything we can to keep our students moving forward into the 21st century.
Our kids are fun, there is nothing like seeing the "ah-ha" moment happen on a students face and knowing that you reached them on a level. We are a STEM school (science, technology, engineering, math focus) school, so we incorporate STEM into every class here. We want our students to be able to engineer new ideas and present them to others.
My Project
Students will be partnered up and each group will take a few chapters to read. These groups will present the summary of the chapters that they read. Once the chapters have been summarized, students will start to engineer a plan for an Ebola outbreak. What would have to happen, how will we combat it, who or what is patient '0'. These ideas will be written and uploaded to a five minute video that will be posted for the class.
These books help improve literacy.
By applying what they have learned about Ebola students can formulate critical thinking skills into coming up with real world scenarios and solutions. This goes beyond our city and makes global awareness front and center. We can discuss how something 4500 miles away has implications here and into their lives. Students have practice in analyzing data and scenarios which helps provide them with skills necessary for the ACT and other college tests.
