The Great Sensory Enrichment Program

My students need the type of interesting audio/visual stimuli that a new HDTV and headphones, plus our existing technologies would provide. These would include, for example: DVD, VCR, connected computer, etc.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students desperately need stimulating experiences that the requested items will provide. They are common but important audio-visual technologies that are prohibitively expensive to purchase without assistance.

Our students are the most disabled served by the public schools: Multiple Disabilities-Severe (MDS).

None of our 11 students are able to speak or to walk independently, if at all. Making matters worse is the possibility that one or more may be "locked-in"; that is, there are indications that some may be very cognitively aware, but without sufficient means to communicate due to quadriplegia, inability to produce speech, etc. The parents of our students are nearly always very poor members of racial minorities and all qualify for the free lunch program. Our school is a special education center situated in an economically depressed section of the largest urban center in the U.S. The district is one of the very largest in the U.S. and is and has been making extreme budget cuts such that acquiring the type of items we are requesting through the district is virtually impossible.

My Project

We are requesting 2 items: a relatively large (42 inch) flat screen, plasma TV. We are also requesting a wall mount that extends from the wall for a smaller TV that has recently been donated to our program. The purpose of the TVs is to provide a combination of educational and social experiences (via recreational activity) for our students that only TV can provide. Besides permitting our students to enjoy level-appropriate regular broadcasts such as those PBS, we can also, with a DVD/VCR player that has also recently been donated to our program, play level-appropriate video materials for our students' enjoyment and education. Likewise, we can connect an iPad (recently acquired via a proposal I wrote) or computer to the TV, once again for both recreational and primarily educational purposes. The mounts we hope to acquire will allow movement/positioning of the screens so students who are, for some of the school day, necessarily in reclining positions, to view the TVs without difficulty.

Given that our students are in school several hours each day, 5 days/wk., 10+ months/yr., the quality of their lives will be significantly improved because of the experiences the requested items will provide.

New "worlds" will be opened for them via television and its myriad of stimulating auditory and visual possibilities. Our students have only recently become recipients of gifts of this type, so we very much appreciate any assistance generous individuals like you might provide in this noble endeavor.
