This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you've seen the movie, "The Great Debaters," you know the power of debating. Kids become enlivened when we begin the debate unit and that liveliness continues up until our final debate versus our neighbor school. We have been in need of a proper podium for some time, and I believe now is our time!

My kids hail from the inner city in California and attend a school that has suffered drastically from budget cuts.

We are supposed to have the same resources, facilities, experienced teachers and leaders as the schools in the suburbs, but that is just not the way it is. Unfortunately, as a society we continue the traditions of the past and rarely consider the inequalities that are forced upon some of our most vulnerable and fragile citizens: the children. Against all odds, our kids remain resilient and remind us that roses can grow within a concrete jungle. My students share similar situations, but their characteristics and interests are as diverse as any you will find. From the most shy, to the most outspoken, from the kid who loves to read, to the kid who loves to speak out for what they believe in, from the child who creates incredible art, to the child who writes an unbelievably deep poem; my kids are America, and their ambitions represent the American Dream.

My Project

The podium that is requested will inspire and excite these kids. We have already begun debating issues in my class this year and we will be ramping it up during our debating unit in February. I am so excited to be requesting this item as I believe it will bring a more professional element to our debates. My students will be learning how to prepare for, and how to speak and act during a debate. The podium will be a part of these important lessons.

Funding this project will build excitement and anticipation for debating.

It is more than a podium to simply stand behind, it is a platform for them to stand upon to speak on the issues that matter to them. It is more than a piece of furniture that will stand in my room and be used in our auditorium, it is a message to students that people care about what they have to say, and value their opinion and talents.
