My students need a variety of high-interest of graphic novels for a class I am teaching called The Graphic Novel Project. This class is intended to improve literacy.
I believe that with literacy comes learning and with learning comes power. I want to instill power into each and every one of my students, and you can help. My students are in need of a set of graphic novels for my classroom.
I am a Language Arts teacher at an alternative school in a small Denver suburb.
Our school has a very diverse demographic as we accept students from the entire Denver metro area. About 75% of our students are free and reduced price lunch, 25% of our students are ELL learners and over 70% of our population are boys. This poses a challenge when it comes to teaching Language Arts. One of my development goals for the year is to increase our school's overall literacy rate. I created a surveymonkey to poll our students on how often they read for pleasure and what types of books they would like to read. Unsurprisingly, the majority of our students admitted to never reading for pleasure--either because they have family or job responsibilities after school or merely because they have yet to find a book that interests them. When asked what types of books they would consider reading, many answered that they would like to see more graphic novels incorporated in schools.
My Project
These graphic novels will be used in a class I will teach called "The Graphic Novel Project," where students will learn about graphic novels, how to read them, common vocabulary used to discuss them, etc. We will also use them to learn common reading comprehension tools such as predicting, analyzing, and using context clues to decipher meaning. Students will participate in meaningful discussion and Socratic seminars to encourage higher levels of thinking. Since every student will be able to pick the graphic novel that he/she chooses to read, I am hoping that once students share what they are reading they will encourage others to eventually read their book as well. It is my wish that these novels instill a lifelong love of reading into my reluctant readers.
You can help improve the literacy rates of our future generation.
In a world where most teens would rather read their twitter feed than a piece of literature, you can help guide them. Please consider donating to my project. Your donations are much needed and SO appreciated. Thank you.
