My Students

School isn't about learning facts. They begin to understand how learning science is important for being able to make smart decisions as consumers, patients and productive citizens in society.

My feisty freshmen are so eager to learn!

I love lab days because they walk in and get so excited! "Are we doing an experiment today?!" I think those are the most impactful and memorable learning experiences and I'm on a mission to do as many as possible!

My Project

My students need kits that allow them to construct biomolecules and an enzyme experiment to relate how these biomolecules work in their bodies everyday. Year after year the concept of biomecules is one of the hardest for my students to grasp. I think part of it is that these building blocks of life are microscopic. They aren't easily seen and manipulated. My students will use the DNA and biomolecules kits to construct models of nucleic acid, protein, carbohydrates and lipids. Then they will experiment with proteins in saliva called enzymes. This will help them understand the role of enzymes in our saliva. The enzymes break down the food we eat into these bio molecules so that our body can use them to function. Bringing in real world application of nutrition and how saliva works along with building models of something they cannot see will help them grasp these concepts. Internalize these concepts best.

Lectures are important because they are a direct way of delivering information to a student.

Studies show however that students can concentrate on one thing for as many minutes as years old they are. I try to never lecture more than 15 minutes per period! So what do I do the rest if the hour? I engage them in various activities to keep their attention and reinforce what they just learned. Having access to these materials will help them learn these very tough concepts!
