Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“An artist's only concern is to shoot for some kind of perfection, and on his own terms, not anyone else's.”. My students are special and have the inspiration to document the visual culture of the Bronx; and communicate to the world what the Bronx Aesthetic is.
The ultimate goal of every educator is to create strong, well rounded and independent young adults who can contribute to the betterment of society.
Quite honestly, the four students who proposed this project are the epitome of what makes me excited to be an educator! They are absurdly creative! I am trying to teach them that financial constraints should not compromise an artists vision.
It is forgotten quite often while visiting museums that the materials used in many masterpiece paintings is simply colored dirt, a binder such as oil or egg and a dried on a piece of linen! Artists have always been the true alchemists, by taking simple materials and creating value through the skilled use of simple things! The tools that we are asking for are beyond our schools budget, but I want to prove to my students that there is always a creative way to finance an artists creative vision.
Four students proposed this project, but it will be orchestrated by the 11th grade (62 students).
My Project
My students are visual artists who want to create a documentary about the visual culture of the Bronx. The camera drones will be used to document outdoor and large scale works of art and architecture. The video cameras will be used to document smaller works of art and will also be used to interview artists and other students. The computer will be used to render the project into a movie that can be seen by the world.
It is my hope that my scholars documentary will do justice to the Bronx.
I have spent almost 10 of my 15 years in education in the South Bronx and I hope that the documentary will show the world what the The Bronx contributed to the world. Break, Hip Hop and Graffiti aesthetic only scratch the surface. My students will learn a lot through this project.
Secondarily, when this project is funded, it will show my students that there are ways to navigate through financial hurdles.
