We all know about the three R's in education: reading, writing, and arithmetic. A fourth R, robots, is being introduced to today's classroom. My third graders couldn't be any more excited!
I teach 20 third grade students at a K-6 Title 1 school in a rural county in Alabama.
My students vary in ability levels, to include gifted and special needs learners. However, all of my students are curious, creative, and eager to learn! 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students have limited experiences outside of the school setting, so we aim to provide them with enriching and exciting learning opportunities.
My Project
Kids love technology! Unfortunately, so many children only view tablets and computers as a means to play games. As educators, we know there is a greater benefit to the technology that is now available to our students. Coding, previously only taught to middle and high school students, is now being introduced in the early grades.
The benefits of coding include logical thinking, problem solving, persistence, collaboration, and communication. All of these skills improve academic success. All of these skills are encouraged, along with creativity, through the use of the Wonder Workshop Dash and Dot robots. The Dash and Dot robots allow students to learn programming concepts as they play, using a drag-and-drop programming language that increases with complexity as they create. With the add on accessories, my students will explore their musical side, their abilities to create videos, and will try their hand at engineering. The possibilities are only limited by our own imaginations!
By contributing to our The 4 Rs: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and Robots!
project, you will be providing my students with an opportunity to explore coding at an early age. This will result in a more confident student when presented with deeper technological learning in the future.
