Video Production students arrive earlier than the other students each day in order to prepare the morning news. A few years ago, we changed the morning announcements to run more like a morning news cast, complete with weather, sports, and other special reports, as well as the daily news.
The students are in high school and come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Though we are an impoverished school, with about 60% of students who receive free or reduced-price lunch. The students in this program are interested in the field of Video Production, and commit to spending a great deal of extra time working in this program. Students are required to arrive at school much earlier than the other students, in order to prepare for the morning broadcast. They also must spend additional time outside the school day, filming events, which they then edit and use to produce movies.
My Project
Students gain valuable experience operating a live news broadcast daily. They must be prepared to go live at 7:45 each day, and do a great deal of prep to make sure all things go smoothly. I am requesting 2 HP laptops. With these two laptops, students will also be able to program and operate the two teleprompters that are needed for each broadcast. Students learn how to think fast on their feet, and make snap decision during the live broadcast.
Students will be able to experience real-life live television broadcasts, complete with teleprompters.
Many students who have gone through this program get excited about video production, and go on to further study it. A recent graduate is doing exceptionally well at the university level, and has gained a spot on their TV broadcasts as a reporter, an interest that was developed in this program. The more real-world, real-life, examples we can provide, the better.
