The 5th and 6th grade students in my classroom are chomping at the bit to engage in the STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology & Math) curriculum being piloted by our school.
These middle schoolers, like most 11-13 year olds, are eager to participate in activities that implement computers and technology to encourage participation in Math and Science activities. Unfortunately, our underfunded, urban school is unable to provide the technological tools my students can use to create and collaborate.
My Project
Last year an organization donated a LEGO robotics to our classroom. The problem is, although my students were able to use their engineering skills to build robots, they did not have the technological resources to program and use the robots they built. When the kit was donated, we were not aware that students would need to install a software on to a computer and use the program to create functional robotics projects.
We are seriously lacking the hands-on materials needed to implement the engineering and technology elements of the STEM curriculum.
We do not have a computer to used the kit and program our robotic creations. Providing our classroom with a computer, will allow my students the opportunity to utilize our resources we have been generously donated and give them access to high tech resources.
