My Students

A successful flipped classroom helps students accept responsibility for learning as the teacher becomes a facilitator to understanding rather than dispenser of facts. Effective technology is essential to providing an information delivery system accessible to students in and out of the classroom.

Our students attend an Early College with a health sciences focus located in an urban setting.

The science curriculum consists of Earth Science in 9th grade and Biology and Chemistry in 10th. Students gain their remaining required science credits in college classes. It is important that they develop the necessary critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills by the end of 10th grade. The foundation for my instructional approach is the constructivist model of learning, with the teacher as a facilitator, not a final authority. Technology implementation is a key component in transferring the ownership of learning from the teacher to the students, a primary objective of constructivism and inquiry-based learning. Educational research has shown that when applied effectively, technology implementation increases student learning, encourages collaborative learning, and supports development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

My Project

While the flipped classroom has many variations, a common component is the delivery of instructional content through state-of-the-art computer technology such as screencasting, podcasts, web animations, movies, video clips, and interactive websites. The headphones and audio splitters will give students immediate and easy access to the targeted instructional materials in the classroom, creating a differentiated, self-paced environment that will foster mastery learning. Providing students with access to computer-based curriculum inside the classroom is particularly important for students that may not have computer and Internet access at home. The use of technology as an aid in the delivery of instructional content allows the teacher to more effectively use face-to-face interaction in the classroom. Teachers will have more time to provide students with opportunities to expand on high-order thinking skills.

The flipped classroom is an ideology (rather than a methodology) that is designed to give educators an additional tool for meeting student needs and improving the instruction.

Effective computer technology is a critical component for expecting students to assume responsibility for accessing instructional content and helping them become independent, self-motivated learners.
