I believe in an interactive classroom where students learn using creative resources. Online resources can enrich a child's learning, but my classroom currently lacks the technology necessary for students to access these resources consistently.
My classroom includes students in a middle school setting with various types of disabilities that are expected to take the same Common Core assessment as the rest of the students at the end of the year.
When these students enter the room, most of them want to take advantage of everything I have to offer, and we accomplish as much as we can with limited resources. My job, as a Special Education Teacher, is to help them close the achievement gap as much as possible from year to year. My school is progressive in the sense that we believe students with disabilities should be in an inclusive environment as much as possible, but my resource classroom lacks updated technology aside from the recent addition of a projector. Our budget for Exceptional Children is very low, so we do not have much. I would like to see my students thrive in an environment with multiple resources so that I have many different options for teaching my students and allowing them to learn in their own way.
My Project
My vision for the use of the requested Chromebooks is limitless. There are numerous programs geared towards helping students with disabilities grow. My class size has gotten larger, so having the Chromebooks would allow me to work with small groups while some students enrich their learning online using programs like VMath and MobyMax. As a whole group, my long-range plans include having the students learn about other countries through a pen pal program. I would incorporate math conversions with currency, writing skills, and comprehension strategies via analyzing the writing of others in this activity.
With Chromebooks in the classroom, the lives of my students will suddenly become much richer.
They will have access to online remediation programs more consistently, enabling me to provide more small-group instruction at the same time. In addition, the students will have opportunities to connect with students in another country. Many more possibilities exist with technology in the classroom. I am excited about everything Chromebooks have to offer!
