Ms. Gates from Pleasant Grove AL is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need two iPads.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
A typical day in my classroom is small group math. In my class, my students are participating in centers that are focused on the skills that they need to work on at that time. They are usually never in their seats. My main goal is for them to see growth in their own learning over the year.
My students are 5th graders.
5th grade is departmentalized and I teach 115 of them math. They are 10 and 11 years old, who are eager to learn and want to have a hands-on learning experience. My students are at the age and time in society where technology is important to them and their way of learning. In the past two years, my students would ask to use the technology that I had available at the time (2 computers and 1 kindle) to practice their math skills that they are needing to work on through our school adopted program, Stride Academy. My school is a great school that is kindergarten through fifth grade. There are five units for each grade level at my school. Every staff member is eager to help in any way to promote student learning.
My students will use the 2 Ipads that I am requesting by participating in our school-adopted program, Stride Academy. They will also be able to practice math skills on apps that are available, especially to work on their multiplication skills. The program, Stride Academy, is a great program where students answer math questions through multiple choice. Depending on their correct or wrong answers, the program is equipped to move up or move down levels depending on where the students are in math. The questions that the students answer correctly lets them earn coins. For every 8-10 points, they can play a game for 30 seconds. They have to then answer more questions to play another game for 30 seconds. By having access to this technology, more of my students will have access to these important, hands-on activities that will promote their learning.
This project will improve my classroom because I can help my students practice the specific skills that they need to work on through technology, as well as through my personal small group attention working on the skills.
This will change my students' lives for the better because they will be independent in their learning and control their pace of learning while working on the skills that they are struggling with or just need a little extra practice.
