Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us make history engaging with technology! My students have limited access to technology in and out of school. We also have less than 15 textbooks for over 120 students. Access to a projector and Chromebook would allow students to experience history and make connections to current events.
I am a history/social studies teacher at an urban high school in Massachusetts.
The school is a technical vocational school which offers academics and a trade (ranging from culinary to auto repair). This attracts a diverse group of students with a wide range of abilities and needs. Although the school is considered under-performing, the students are passionate learners and critical thinkers.
Our school is large and does not have sufficient funding for textbooks, technology, and basic classroom supplies. Last year as a first year teacher, I borrowed technology and was successful in engaging my students in social studies. The students loved learning about history and different cultures through Skype interviews, research projects, and film.
I hope to have another positive experience with using technology with my 120 sophomore students this year.
My Project
Technology allows students to connect with the world around them and learn important skills for their future education and career. By having access to a projector, my students will be able to view articles, film, and images from around the world. They will be able to create and present projects. By having a Chromebook, they will be able to research and engage with people everywhere.
For example, last year I used Skype to have my students interview a student in Brazil. They loved the opportunity to ask questions and learn about different cultures.
Learning to use technology effectively will prepare my students for life after high school and will enable to them to use their resources to engage with their community and think critically about global issues.
Learning how to use technology will allow my students to become life long learners.
They will always know how to research and learn independently.
My students need to learn about life outside of their neighborhoods, which unfortunately are plagued by poverty and violence. Access to technology would allow them to engage with people around the world and think critically about social studies. Thank you for your support!
