Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a class of eighteen, wonderful 4 years old. They love to learn and work together to create a sense of community in our classroom. They are funny, loving, and curious students who come to school smiling as they walk through the door every morning.
Our school is one of a handful NYC Charter Schools that are part of the Full Day Pre-K-For-All program, implemented within the 5 boroughs of NYC.
In our second year of this program, we continue to work on improving what our Pre-K program has to offer. The Pre-K students come from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Our Pre-K class consists of 1/3 native Spanish speakers, while the majority of students speak a second language at home. Although we are fortunate to have many materials in our classroom, as a Title 1 school with Pre-K through 12th grade classes, it can be difficult for us acquire new materials throughout the year.
In a world where technology has become an integral part of learning, my students want to explore the world around them, and technology would significantly enhance this process.
My Project
With the use of iPads with protective covers, my native Spanish-speaking students could not only develop their language skills through the use of translation games/activities but could also improve their fine motor skills and social skills when collaborating with others. These skills would also apply to the other students in my class who are first learning Spanish. For math and literacy, each student could have their individual needs met through 1-on-1 instruction and daily skills practice.
Although a majority of our classroom learning occurs through play-based activities, 4 years old children require a comprehensive and interactive learning experience. Through the use of iPad apps, my students would be able to experience dramatic read aloud at the touch of a button, even when working independently. This would enable the children to become even more engaged and excited about reading at a young age. Math and literacy apps would also meet students' developmental needs by providing differentiation and visuals.
One of the main goals for using the iPads would be to enable the students to express their curiosity in a multitude of ways.
Access to this technology would immerse students in a classroom environment that allows them to participate at their own pace, thereby further differentiating their linguistic and cognitive development. Please support my students in their exciting journey towards furthering their cognitive and physical development.
