My students need 10 Chromebooks to help them cross into a level of learning that enables them to create brighter futures, not only for themselves, but for their community!
"We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher's hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world." -David Warlick.
Our school is a rural school district that serves approximately 350 students (grades 5-8) in which 63% of those students receive free- or reduced- lunches.
In fact, most of my students will have the opportunity to be the first person in their family to earn a college degree.
Our students are hungry to learn; however, textbooks no longer satisfy their desires. Although the teachers in our school work diligently to create lessons that are meant to be engaging for the students, the method of lecture-discussion is no longer effective. Our students long to control their own learning. This is where technology comes into play.
Sadly, many of my students do not have access to technology at home. Due to the lack of it at home as well as in the classroom, many of them are unaware of how to access the limitless technology available for them. I am completely convinced that with the full implementation of technology in my classroom, student interest rates would soar.
My Project
By using Google Classroom on the Chromebooks, students will no longer be tied down to labs or school-only computers. My students will have daily access to this technology and will be expected to use it frequently.
It is my vision for my class to be strongly project-based. When they are given the opportunity to utilize the Chromebooks, my students will complete projects, conduct research, and access more informational texts than I could ever supply. In addition, I will able to provide quicker feedback, thus encouraging faster and more accurate work.
Research done by my students will allow them to gain more real-world experience as well as encourage student-driven learning. While executing their research, the students will be assessing the information they read on their own as well as determining the importance of what they are reading. They will then create a project using the information they find and deem important. In turn, this allows me to gauge my students' abilities.
Being a reading teacher, I am required to teach a variety of texts, many of which are informational and literary.
By having the Chromebooks, I will be able to build a cross-curricular bridge from Reading to all other subjects.
When students have technology at their fingertips, they are able to open a great window to real-world experiences and student-based learning.
If students are actively driving their learning, positive results can be expected from both the students and the teacher.
