This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students know that we, the staff and administration, expect them to take college courses by their junior year. As a result, there is a strong desire on the part of our students to master the math needed for success in college and on the ACT test. They need help to do this.
Our school is a small middle college/charter school in Oklahoma.
Our students are primarily Hispanic (79%), low income (70% free/reduced lunch) and eager to change their futures through education. Almost 75% of our students will be first generation high school graduates and 83% first generation college students. Our school emphasizes technology as part of the learning experience. My students can find most assignments and any notes I put on the board on the Internet. I also use the Internet for research and teaching. T he problem is that, in the switch to a charter school, we lost all our laptops, textbooks, and technology. Most of our students access the Internet with a cell phone or a computer at home but not all students have this option. Without this basic access, our students will never achieve their full potential. Even with phones, access is limited. With over 45% of our juniors and seniors in college classes we are taking chances and changing the face of education for the better.
Currently our students access some of their learning, assignment and instruction on-line. A few students have laptops; some access their work using a cell phone or a computer at home. However, some students have no access to the Internet. Currently these students do some combination of sharing, using the library or using a college computer. However, this restricts the students' access to times when I may not be available to help.
My Project
I want to use the six HP Chromebook laptops in class so students can have equal opportunity to learn during classtime. We will use sites like "Khan Academy", "Edmodo" and on-line text books. Almost every assignment and most of what I write on the board can be accessed on-line. The Chromebooks will definitely improve the prognosis for future success for those students currently without access to technology. Access to this technology will improve the atmosphere in the classroom, decrease the disparity between the "haves" and the "have-nots", and improve achievement.
These Chromebooks are for use in the classroom, and specifically for students who do not have use of a phone to access classroom data.
The Chomebooks will definitely improve the prognosis for future success for those students currently without access to technology. Access to this technology will also improve the atmosphere in the classroom by decreasing the disparity between the "have" and the "have-not" students.
