"A wise man doesn't know all the answers. He just knows where to find them!" We spend a great deal of time researching topics of interest. We discuss architectural design of local buildings to cultures of foreign lands.
Our school is a combination of gifted students from 8 schools.
Students travel to us via bus one day per week, so we never have the same students 2 days in a row. My students never cease to amaze me! They are creative and curious and super chatty! It's so much fun to watch the excitement each day as they learn new things. Our school is very different than regular classroom. We are able to spend time digging deeper into subjects. We can read, research and share about any topic we choose. This year we are studying architecture through the lens of multiple disciplines involved in any one structure. They can be a civil engineer or a real estate agent or architect or whatever they choose! They will learn what role their career choice plays in the development of our community and what they need to be successful in that particular field. Our theme this year is "building up our community". We will discuss and develop ways to build up our community, from playgrounds to homeless centers.
My Project
We have 6 Chromebooks. My students need 6 more Chromebooks to bring our classroom into the 21st century technology based classroom that we so desperately desire! We are trying to get up to 24, so that each child will have access to them throughout the day. The possibilities with these Chromebooks are endless. They can use them to work together on projects, presentations, research and problem solving. They can even read books together and have a hangout about the book moderated by their favorite teacher! Eventually, I would love to see each child have a Chromebook to take home with them and use throughout the school year. With us meeting only one day per week, Google+ makes staying connected so much easier. We can help them with assignments, discuss their latest discoveries, and have the world at their fingertips! This will allow for differentiation more than ever.
In our state the gifted and talented program is not fully funded.
We receive no funds for technology that most classrooms get without even asking. We have been very fortunate to find several grants and to receive hand me downs from other schools and offices. Our students love to learn and need a means to work with the latest in technology to help increase their skills and knowledge. These tools are invaluable to the students that receive the opportunity to work with them!
