My students need book assembly kits, PITT manga pens, and blank books so each of the 6 art classes can make 2 books by writing a story and illustrating the story, fact or fiction. Reading can be fun!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Books can be an important tool to unlock and guide students in todayâs world. There are so many challenges facing our students today and to arm them with books is really helping them face those challenges with the information and knowledge they acquire from reading them/making them.
I see 150 students a day ranging from ages12-14, boys and girls.
Students are in the school uniform of white top and blue bottom every day. Most students are clean, young, eager and happy. In return I feel I want to keep that purity and innocence with giving them a strong art program with fun, exciting projects and I sneak in math and English and history so though they are becoming stronger creative thinkers while learning some core subjects.
They are âteenagersâ and emotional. They are in the in between child and young adult. They are very impressionable and with most of my students working n clay, using watercolors, cutting, drawing on cloth, using oil pastels for the first time and they are really happy to try new materials.
Some come from not ideal home situations, some students are homeless, live in foster homes, live with relatives and school is the one constant for them. At school they are all equal students and can be encouraged, complimented, and given a warm, safe, learning.
My Project
I am requesting bookmaking materials enough to make approximately 300 books in two different sizes.
Each art student can create their own book and then write and illustrate their book with the pens, paper, spiral coils and pre-cut chipboard. The bookmaking kits include pre-punched paper, pre-punched chipboard covers and backs, spiral coils, and an instruction sheet.
The smaller books include precut boards and the finished size will be 3-1/4" x 3-1/4" x 1/2" made with spine boards and self-stick note pads (3" x 3").
I am also requesting pens with India ink for clear/clean drawings and a chance for students to use India ink pens for a new experience with a new material The pens requested are quality, permanent artistsâ pen for art and graphics. Pigmented India ink is both acid free and archival (pH neutral). Smudge proof and waterproof when dry. The ink contains the highest-quality pigments and are highly permanent after drying.
Books are important, to read, to enjoy, to appreciate, to make and see what makes a book a book.
Making reading fun with art is a win win situation for students. Students like making things in the art room and to make something they can share and keep for many years is an added incentive. The books made will be displayed in the Contra Costa Fair at the end of the year and they each get ribbons for participating.
