Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Computer science students, on average, are only 18% female, 3% black, and 8% Hispanic. My students are such motivated learners, that many of them have taken up coding as an extra-curricular activity in order to improve this statistic!
My coding kiddos are freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in high school.
They attend a public charter school that asks a lot of them academically, but they still push themselves to become even better learners, and people, through many extra-curricular activities. Thanks to the Hour of Code, many of them have become very interested in coding, and have already started their journey towards becoming computer science majors! This is very exciting, because across the nation, girls, Latinos, and African Americans are underrepresented in the computer science field, and we want to change that.
My Project
Our school is lucky enough to have chromebooks for our students to use, and these devices are how my students completed an introductory course in JavaScript. Unfortunately, not all computer programming (especially the advanced programs) are functional with chromebooks, and we have started coming across this issue, because of their hard work thus far. Having a Macbook Pro will allow these advanced coders to keep pushing their computer science knowledge to the next levels to prepare for college and careers in computer science!
Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to learn computer science.
The basics help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for any future career. There are not many schools that teach computer science, so our kiddos would be gaining a leg up with this technology!
