My students need an Aquaculture System with heater to use in our greenhouse, a countertop system for in the classroom, and Hydro-Tubes to do hydroponics individually.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Where's the soil? How can we grow plants without dirt?" Students know that plants need water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide, but most also think they need soil to grow. Let's inspire these students to think outside the box and introduce them to the world of aquaculture.
My inner-city students are very curious and love doing hands-on activities.
We have done several environmental projects with the help of Disney and Disney Planet Challenge over the past three years, and the students gain so much from going outside and learning about the world around them. They love working outside and it is even more exciting to them when they can see progress and taste what they have produced in the gardens.
My Project
Our former principal had a vision to have students experience life as much as possible and give them opportunities that their parents may not be able to afford or even dream for their children. As her dream became a reality for our students she allotted grant funds for a greenhouse. We have used it to grow vegetables and flowers, and I would like to take it one step further and introduce the children to hydroponics and aquaculture. We have fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals that the students take care of in the classroom, but I would like to add fish to the greenhouse instead of buying fertilizer for our plants. This grant will add an aquaculture system to raise plants and fish, hydroponics growing kits for in-class use, and a small aquaponics tabletop unit for inside the classroom. Students will learn about sustainability by growing vegetables and farm-raised fish inside the school's greenhouse.
Our project will involved setting up three 55 gallon barrels as an aquaculture unit inside our greenhouse and growing plants in class as a hydroponics activity.
