Take The Rhythm To The Street

My project needs 5 pairs of drum sticks.

I teach K-5 elementary music at a very diverse school. We have seen an increase in our student population of the number of free and reduced lunch students to 41% this year. We have a school-wide focus on the multiple intelligences.

I have a handful of at-risk African American male students in 5th grade this year. These boys are musically talented, but cannot afford the cost of a band instrument. They all wanted to play the drums in band but were unable to because the middle school band teachers require that you have had two years of piano in order to be a percussionist. They have taken the attitude that band "is lame" to avoid being seen as left out or disappointed. These boys are also our at-risk students in terms of behavior as many of them have non-supportive (or non-existent) parental support.

I would like to start a lunch drumming club with these students. I would like to take their interest in drumming and have them create a group of their own to not only foster a sense of community amongst their peers, but to also encourage them to express their musicality in an ensemble. These drum sticks will be given to these boys and we will work to create an ensemble experience similar to band, but in a smaller group setting and with a "Stomp" feel to it. And who knows - if they stick with it maybe they'll end up in that drum line after all!

Your help and support will allow these young men to take a step towards becoming a life-long musician. They will keep these drum sticks with them and be responsible for them. (This will mean that they will have an instrument to carry around too!) They will also have these drum sticks for the rest of their lives and when they create music, hopefully they will remember that someone believed in them enough to give them one small gift. Maybe someday they will do the same for another young man who is struggling to find his identity and a place to fit in?
