One of my favorite quotes is, “The limits of my language means the limits of my world.” This is the struggle my students try to overcome every day. They work hard every day trying to keep their struggles with the language from limiting their future. We are requesting Fire tablets to help.
I work with the ESL students at our high school.
While we have students from various parts of the world, most of our students are refugees from Burma. They fled their country with the hope of religious freedom and a better future. After years of struggle in refugee camps, they were dropped off into our school system with no English and no translators. We are a relatively small school with no history of ESL students. We didn't know where to start. But THEY did, they worked hard, they wrote down every word, they even started family study groups. But, there were gaps and I am hoping these tablets will help with catch up. Due to lack of ESL classes available, my students are placed in regular mainstream classes. While most of these classes have on-line support to their textbooks, my students do not have access to the technology to use these resources. The Fire 7" WiFi tablets, that are being requested, will provide them school and home access.
My Project
I am requesting 11 Fire 7" WiFi tablets, along with 11 stand up cases for each. Each tablet will be checked out to an individual student to use throughout the day and at home. These will provide each student instant access to on-line dictionaries, tutorials and assistance. There are several apps that have been purchased that the students can use to work on skills that they have missed. One of them is MobyMax. Although this program is designed for K-8, it covers topics that that these students have not had and that high school teachers do not have time to go back over. This program will provide them with individual instruction to fill in the gaps that they have in reading, writing and math. Each student will be given assignments, specific to their individual level and need. There is a placement test in each specific area of study. These students will be able to use these assignments, not only in my ESL class, but will be able to use it as modified work in their regular classrooms.
Having visual instruction is especially important in math.
With programs like MobyMax and Khan Academy, these Fire tablets will allow instant visual instruction for math. Most of these students do not have access to home computers and the students will be able to check these tablets out to continue their work while at home. Parents will be an active part of this checkout and will provide better communication between school and home.
