Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 9th-12th grade. I have my students' until they are 22 years old. Due to their disabilities we focus on everything! From math and language arts to job skills and independent living skills. They are highly motivated to learn and be like their peers and technology plays big part.
I have a wide range of abilities in my classroom.
We do not have a set curriculum because they are far below their high school peers. The challenge for me has been to find content at their level that is still appealing to them and not too elementary. The high school that we are at is wonderful. They fully embrace my population of students. We have had the opportunity to be included in many activities throughout the high school. We have also implemented programs to encourage the students towards independent living. My main goal for my students is for them to understand and use technology and be able to function as an adult fairly independently. For some of my students this will be a longer process.
My Project
If my students had the use of tablets in the classroom it would open up a whole new world for them. They would be able to use this technology for their reading skills. They would be able to access relevant stories, documents, and useful programs. The tablets would also be used for math skills. The biggest skill that we are working on is shopping and the use of money. With the tablets we would be able to access store websites, learning activities and programs. Another important area the tablets would be used is for transitional activities. They would be able to fill out applications in a format that is becoming more widely used. They will be able to access information on jobs and the qualifications needed. They would also be able to research the fundamentals in becoming an independent adult.
Having tablets in the classroom would enhance the students' learning.
This would make such a big impact on the students' lives. They would gain confidence with a variety of academic skills, adult transitional skills and the use of technology.
Please help us to make a positive impact on these amazing students' lives.
