My Students

How does any teacher really know if their students have learned the answer to the essential question guiding every lesson? I have wrestled with a good way to judge the answer to this question. By using technology I could survey the students and have data at my hands that lets me know who is on track

My students are of mixed race from a high poverty area.

Most are latch key kids who don't go home to two parents. They have typically been low performers on state assessments and historically don't place a high value on education. The school is located in the area of Erie that has the highest crime rate. The school has 1000 students in it, and demographically are 45% African American, 25% white, 10% Hispanic/Latino, and the rest are foreign born students from 19 different nations. The majority of the foreign born students have lived in refugee camps and many have come to America to escape war torn nations. Our school on any given day has a 10% absenteeism rate with another 5% arriving to school tardy. Most of the students have a part-time job by the time they are juniors which they often need to help supplement the family income. 15% of the population are teenage parents, both fathers and mothers, and often times have to decide between school and staying home with their children.

My Project

Since the school has such a high absentees rate, and tardy rate when I do get the students in the classroom it is imperative that I judge if they learned the material or not. With the use of a wireless Sony Tablet I would be able to go around the room and survey the students to see if they did gain the knowledge from the lesson. I would use a survey tool and formative questioning to gage the level of knowledge gained by each student. What I would plan on doing is have the survey compiled at the end of every day and judging by the overall level of the students I could adjust my pedagogy, as well as lesson plans to meet the needs of the students on any given topic. Also I would be able to show the students their own "data" on how they have progressed over the course of the year, charting their growth or lack of growth and give them a up to date graph of their gained knowledge. Hopefully this would cause an ah-ha moment for those students who are not progressing as much as their classmates.

The wider impact that this project could have on the lives of the students is by showing them their own growth or lack of growth in the class, they might start to put a greater emphasis on education.

This would be data that shows that when they are in class they gain knowledge, but when they are absent they don't. Or maybe it change the study habits of students, showing them the need to do homework and classwork and making them better learners and students.
