Tablet Computer For Student Who Is HH And Has Down Syndrome

My Students

Imagine that you love learning and being with your peers, but struggle because you cannot talk or hear as well as everyone else. Sometimes your thoughts and feelings go unheard. You cannot write independently. You read and do math at a lower level than your peers.

These are the challenges that one of my student faces everyday she comes to school.

Even so, she comes every day with a great big smile and a hug for everyone. I teach students with disabilities who are included in their general education classrooms. One of my students has Down Syndrome, a hearing impairment, and a speech and language impairment. She is included in her 4th grade general education classroom for the majority of the day. She loves being with her peers and her peers love being with her. However, she is working at a completely different level then the rest of the class. In reading, she reads at a 2nd grade level. She needs support in writing, sometimes hand over hand to be able to write. She is learning to type on a computer, but it is not always available to her. She needs something she can use that will allow her to access the curriculum at her level and pace and also help her to communicate with her teachers and peers.

My Project

A tablet computer would accelerate this student's learning. It would be used on a daily basis to aide in all subjects. The tablet has applications that aide in communication. I could create a board for her with different words and sentences she uses on a daily basis and she can touch them and it will speak for her. She could have more interaction with her peers. It would also help her be able to communicate what she knows to her teachers. She could be more independent with this tablet. She could use the touch screen to type or write sentences. There are math applications she could use during math where she would be working at her own level. She could use the touch screen to touch answers and not have to write them.

If I could use this tablet with her, there is no limit to what she will be able to do.

She will be able to communicate independently, write independently, and read and do math at her level.
