Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember learning about synonyms, antonyms, homophones, homonyms, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives? Some of us have forgotten in grammar what part of speech is what. My students are expected to master much of all the parts of speech by the end of the year. Help!
My students are smart, driven, and very verbal.
They are 95% Hispanic and 5% African American. Most of them do not have a computer or other technology at home. They are exposed to violence and socioeconomic limitations, like lack of food, that others take for granted. Our school provides a safe environment away from gangs and other socioeconomic limitations.
In my classroom, they get to dream, and the sky is the limit. They've planned future traveling plans, designed their dream homes, and have become celebrated community heroes. The classroom is a safe haven where dreaming high is encouraged. Nothing is impossible when they dream, write, and share their future plans. They would thrive as enthusiastic learners if they were provided with the memories that will last a lifetime. They will experience and recollect their memories in a whole new way.
My Project
My students are required to learn within six weeks into the start of the school year about the difference between synonyms and antonyms, homonyms and homophones, prefixes and suffixes. They take a unit test in language arts every six weeks. It has 50 questions which includes reading comprehension, punctuation, word knowledge, and grammar rules.
In order for my students to have a fighting chance, I need to supplement my lessons with fun, engaging, and interactive lessons. This is the reason why I have requested resources like Learning Charts for Synonyms, Antonyms, Homophones, Prefixes, and Suffixes. I have also requested a The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms, so that my students can have available as a resource and reference. The Night Knights, The Homophones Game and the Homonym Flash Cards will be available for my students to access in a language arts center for practice and mastering of concepts.
I need your generosity to help my students master parts of speech and other grammar concepts that may be tedious and boring if a teacher is not willing to make it fun and exciting.
I can assure you that just by having the requested materials, our engaging games and grammar lessons, including parts of speech will be magnificent. In turn, my students will learn and master grammar lessons that otherwise would have been tedious and dull. Please help my students be more grammar savvy!
