My Students

Science is about exploration and application. My students are tasked with applying physical science concepts to environmental issues. I would like to expand this by introducing the chemistry of biodiesel and landfills.

My students are motivated and inquisitive learners.

They come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and personal interests. They are young minds that are concerned with the state of our environment and the decisions that mold our planet. Drawing these current issues into the science classroom is motivating on many levels.

My Project

Having these supplies can help me to integrate more environmental science into the physical science classroom. Teaching chemistry from textbooks and worksheets is confusing and ineffective. I like to make learning hands-on and inquiry based. However, making science applicable to a student's life choices makes an even greater impact on learning. These specific supplies will allow students to create biodiesel and simulated landfills in the classroom. Students will be able to better understand chemical reactions and issues surrounding biodiesel widespread use from the biodiesel kit. The landfill kit will help them understand the chemistry surrounding biodegradability. Both labs will help them to understand basic chemistry and issues currently impacting our planet. Through these resources, they will become more aware of science and their personal choices on consumption, recycling and their carbon footprint.

These labs will help my students apply chemistry to real world issues and will introduce the basics of environmental chemistry.

Hands-on activities are great, but hands-on activities that impact a student's life, world and choices are even better.
