This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Recall your teenage years. They weren't exactly a piece of cake! Sometimes kids need to be transported into a different world and Fantasy books are just the tool to help them navigate their own changing lives!

I teach eighth grade in a public middle school in New York.

My school is high poverty, almost 100% free lunch, and my students cannot afford to buy books. My school is a wonderful community, but severely under-resourced. We are a family, and I would do anything to make sure my students are prepared for high school. My students are the oldest in a K-8 school. While the middle school is attached to the elementary school, it is so clear that my students are in a time of transition and need to be more understood. I work in Harlem, New York City and while my students are exposed to many unsettling things every day, I would love to also expose them to the power of a great book.

My Project

I am requesting several of the hottest new Fantasy books. These books will help my students take a break from their ever-changing lives and transport them to different worlds. Many of my students have requested new books such as "The Maze Runner" and are dying to read them. How can I say no? The image of a student (especially a Middle School student) curled up reading about another realm is so powerful!

Just because a kid is starting to change and understand the adult world better, does not mean she or he should sacrifice his or her imagination.

Imagination is a powerful thing, both in the working world and in life. I do not want my students to lose the notion that books are powerful, and imagining other possibilities is crucial.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
