My students need hands on tools like fraction bars, place value charts, and 3D shape models to make learning math real.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We work hard every day. There is a lot going against my students, like poverty and language barriers. I love the saying, "So what? Now what?" It inspires me and the students to look at our circumstances and ask, "What are we going to do about it?" The answer? Learn.
Our school is diverse and many of our students are bilingual.
My students are full of culture and stories they want to share. In my classroom I hear English and Spanish while students work together on projects, explain concepts in their native language to a friend who needs a little help, and tell about their weekend. Our school is a place where we love to honor everyone's background. Each student's story is unique and we can learn so much from each other.
My Project
Because I have a background in special education, I pay special attention to the unique needs of each individual learner. A typical lesson or unit will involve students exploring and discovering, sharing their findings with each other and verifying what they learned. this requires hands on activities, manipulatives, and opportunities to apply what we learn to real life situations. With the materials I chose, student can take the physical and realistic concepts they can touch and use in real life and start transferring that knowledge into something abstract and conceptual. Students need this realistic background knowledge as a reference tool when taking standardized tests so that using formulas and pictures to solve problems has true meaning and purpose.
I live for the 'Light bulb moment' when a student has been working really hard and you can see their face light up while saying "OH!
I get it now!" Having manipulatives like these go a long way towards building these moments. Kids don't want to sit and do work sheets all day every day. They want to work with things, touch things, move around, use what they've learned to accomplish something in real life. I hope that these tools will inspire them to continue this kind of learning for a lifetime.
