Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

A typical day in my science class involves students gaining hands-on experience with the few lab supplies that we have. These middle school students are excited about being in a science class and they want to get their hands on something real however we lack the resources needed to accomplish this.

Legacy Preparatory Academy, formerly Mount Pleasant Middle School is a middle school serving students in grades 6, 7, and 8, with a population of around 100 students.

The school is unique, not only because of its small size, but also its student demographics. Ninety-eight percent of Legacy Prep's student population is eligible to receive free or reduced price lunch and over 90% of students reside in single parent households. Of the 100 students at Legacy Prep, 88% are Black, 4% are White, 6% are Hispanic and 2% are Multiracial. At Legacy Prep, we have pledged to deliver programs to increase the critical success of our children. Our mission is to provide educational programs and services that foster improved academic success and wellness. To do this, we must have funding that will support our efforts. While seeking funding that will provide long-term support, we appreciate contributions at all levels to ensure success.

My Project

The frog dissection kit will allow my students to work in groups to learn what real body systems look like and how they function in a real organism. Students learn more when they are active participants in their learning. My hope is to make the frog dissection lab a highlight of their middle school year. I also plan to use several of the other supplies I am requesting such as the zinc and sodium hydroxide in our physical science section of our curriculum. I will use these materials to show students that science can be fun by turning a penny into silver and then gold. Along with the dissection lab I also hope this lab will spark an interest in them pursuing a career in the scientific field.

The students that I teach come from impoverished backgrounds and not many of them have parental figures that have finished high school much less attend college.

Students in low income neighborhoods and labeled disadvantaged fail to pursue careers in the scientific field. This project will allow my students to get their hands on real scientific tools and real frogs. You may be inspiring a future doctor, nurse, or scientist by supporting this project.
