My classroom is filled with 21 very active second graders. I have 11 students well below grade level. These students in particular need daily practice. We have NO technology in our classroom.
Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
Yeats
My class consists of 11 very active "Power Ranger" loving boys and 10 "girly" girls.
The boys love action and play. The girls love to help and be involved in what is going on.
I have one homeless student and five students being raised by grandparents. I have 12 students on free lunch.
My school is a lower middle class school. Parents have been hit hard by this economy and have either lost their jobs or have had to take a lesser paying job to feed their family.
The school also includes a group of students that live in a high crime and gang infested area. These students are very street wise and are all about survival each day.
My school does not qualify for Title 1 funds so therefore it is not blessed with the technology necessary to interest these types of students.
My Project
Have you ever been asked to do something but didn't have the equipment to do the task?
My students have been asked to do the same thing. They need to work on reading skills that they are weak in but they have no means to do so.
I see my students using the IPads daily. Our school uses IStation to evaluate our students. Istation then prepares lessons for the students to remediate the skills the students lack. There are three tiers with Tier 3 being below grade level. I have 11 students in Tier 3. For the program to work properly and benefit the students Tier 3 students should work in the program at least 90 minutes a week.
As of now, my students have logged zero minutes because we do not have technology readily available.
My goal is to have zero students in Tier 3 by the end of the school year.
This donation will give my students real world exposure to technology and will also provide activities that interest students in a technological world.
Boys and girls that love video games are not thrilled with paper and pencil activities.
This donation will allow students high and low to use the programs our school has in place and grow academically.
